لم ينل تاريخ العراق في حقبة تسلط التركمان القره قوينلو والآق قوينلو إهتماماً من قبل الباحثين العرب في ميدان الدراسات التاريخية، بينما نالت الحقب السابقة العديد من دراساتهم وبحوثهم، ورأيت أن دراسة هذه الحقبة ضرورية، لأنها تغطي النقص الحاصل في المكتبة العربية عن هذه المدة، وتكشف لنا ما واجه العراق من ويلات على يد الحكام التركمان الجدد الذين كانوا كأسلافهم المغول بدوا رحلا بعيدين عن حياة التحضر والمدينة تواقين لإستغلال سكان المدن والفلاحين إلى أقصى الحدود، فنظام حكمهم مؤسس على الظلم والإستغلال.
لذلك، عاشت البلاد مدة حكمهم في فوضى وإضطراب، فالإقطاع وصل إلى ذروته، وتدنت أحوال السكان إلى الحضيض، وانتشرت الأمراض والأوبئة، وانكفأت النشاطات الثقافية.
وبإختصار تكاد مدة حكمهم تكون أسوأ ما مر به العراق قديماً وحديثاً على ما نرجح، ومع ذلك فإن ما قدمته المصادر المعاصرة من نصوص أظهرت أن مرارة الإحتلال وإستبداد أدواته لم تحل دون إستمرار الشعب في كثير من أوجه نشاطات الحضارية من إقتصادية وإجتماعية وثقافية.
قسم البحث إلى تمهيد وثمانية فصول وخاتمة، تضمن التمهيد دراسة موجزة لأوضاع العراق العامة قبل القرن التاسع الهجري، أي في حقبة التسلط الإيلخاني الجلائري.
