العراق... ذلك الاسم الكبير في تاريخه، المثير للجدل في حاضره، فقد شغل العراق عالم اليوم، لمدة تربو على عشرين عاماً، فما من خطاب رئاسي، أو تصريح رسمي، أو مقابلة فضائية، أو ندوة سياسية، أو مقالة فكرية... بإعلام مرئي أو مسموع أو مقروء، في جميع أنحاء العالم، إلا وفي فقرة منه، شيء عن العراق، ذلك أن العراق في خطاب أخير للرئيس بوش، هو مركز الإرهاب العالمي، أو هو التجسيد الأعلى لمحور الشر، ربما منذ قيامه في السر البابلي، أو منذ اقتنائه لأسلحة الدمار الشامل، التي لا يقتنيها في عالم الخير، أحد غيره. لقد وضع العراق منذ بداية الثمانينات في صندوق كراهية، أجج لها الإعلام الأمريكي وصنوه في الأعلام الغربي الآخر، بتشويه لا مثيل له في تاريخ العالم، من تصوير طغيان صدام الوحشي، إلى حلبجة، ثم إلى المقابر الجماعية فالسجون... وما يمكن أن يبزّ بربريات بالجمع، كان قد شهدها العالم في تاريخه، مع موسوليني وهتلر وستالين وفرانكو سالازار وبينوشيت... من حيث أن صدام يعد لهم جميعاً فلا يعلو أحد فوق وحشيته... والمشكلة أن المفكر والسياسي، والاقتصادي، وعالم الاجتماع العربي، يمتح من جذر الإعلام العالمي المهيمن، لا لشيء، وإنما ببساطة، لأن الإعلام العربي غير موجود، فإذا وجد فهو في الحضن من أربابه الأمريكيين لقد شوهت أميركا ليس حاضر الأمة بل وماضيها كذلك إلى درجة يراد بها الإحاطة بتراث تاريخها ليحل محله ثقافة أمريكية بقوة عولمية تستقي منابعها الأخلاقية، من صراع الحضارات... فإذا كان الأمر كذلكن مع قيم البشرية في ماضيها (من حيث أن أمريكا أمريكا لا تحب الماضي) فكيف سيكون الأمر مع العراق في حاضره، ذلك الحاضر الذي تمرد على بيت الطاعة الأحادي، لا لوجه التمرد في ذاته، بل لغاية الخروج من النفق ليس أكثر. بماذا اصطدم مشروع العراق إذن؟ من هذا المنطلق يحاول الكاتب الكشف عن حقيقة جوهر العداء الأمريكي للعراق، من خلال جولة موضوعية في تاريخ العراق من محمد علي باشا إلى عبد الناصر فصدام حسين في محاولة لاستقراء الخطوط السياسية الأمريكية التي تشابكت إلى حدّ أدخل العراق في نفق لا بد له أن يدفع ثمناً للخروج منه.
