وفي هذا الكتاب المفصّل يتحرّى "يوسف ساسون" النزعات الكامنة لتدفق اللاجئين العراقيّين: فأيّ طبقات وأيّ جماعات إثنيّة وطائفيّة غادرت (وما زالت تغادر) وإلى أين وكيف؟ ويتفحّص الكاتب، إستناداً إلى أبحاث واسعة وجديدة أجراها، التأثير الإقتصادي لهذا الخروج على العراق نفسه وعلى البلدان المضيفة في المنطقة، وهي: الأردن، وسوريّة، ولبنان، كما يحلّل السياسات الدوليّة بشأن قضيّة اللاجئين، ويقيم الخيارات المتاحة للعودة وإعادة التوطين.
يمثل هذا الكتاب الدليل الإرشاديّ الأوّل والحاسم لما سيحدث في هذه القضايا الّتي سينظر إليها على أنها أهمَّ القضايا التي تؤثر على الشرق الأوسط.
