«بستان العارفين» مصنف في الرقائق والزهديات، وترقيق القلوب بكلام الله ورسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وكلام صحابته الكرام، وأولياء الله الصالحين، والعلماء العاملين العارفين.
ولأن الدنيا دار نفاد لا دار خلود، ودار عبور لا دار حبور، ودار فناء لا دار بقاء، ودار انصرام لا دار دوام..جاء في القرآن العزيز التحذير من الركون إليها، والاغترار بها والاعتماد عليها. وكذلك جاءت الأحاديث النبوية، والآثار الحكمية، فلهذا كان الأَيْقَاظُ من أهلها: العُبّاد، وأعقل الناس فيها:الزهاد.
فلذا كما قال المؤلف كان حقاً على الإنسان أن يسلك طريق العقلاء، ويذهب مذهب البُصراء. يذكر فيه مؤلفه ـ وهو الناقد الخبير ـ جملاً من نفائس اللطائف، وحقائق المعارف، بأسلوب رصين يبعد مطالعه عن الملل. وقد ضمَّنه من الآيات الكريمات، والأحاديث النبويات، وأقاويل السلف المنيرات، ومستجاد المأثور عن الأخيار، من عيون الحكايات، والأشعار الزهديات.
ويبين غالباً صحة الأحاديث وحُسْنها وحال رواتها، وبيان ما قد يخفى ويُشكل من معانيها، ويضبط ما يحتاج إلى تقييد حذراً من التصحيف وفراراً من التغيير والتحريف. وقد يحذف الإسناد للاختصار، ولكون هذا الكتاب موضوعاً للمتعبدين، ومن ليسوا إلى معرفة الإسناد بمحتاجين. وإذا كان في الحديث أو الحكاية، لفظٌ غريبٌ أو اسمٌ مبهمٌ بحاجة إلى ضبط أو بيان.. قيَّده وأوضحه بالضبط المحكم والبيان، وما احتاج إلى شرح.. شرحه وبينه.
ويندرج في ضمن هذا الكتاب أنواع من العلوم الشرعية، وجملٌ من لطائفها الحديثية والفقهية والآداب الدينية، وطرفٌ من علم الحديث ودقائق الفقه الخفية، ومهماتٌ من أصول العقائد، وعيون من نفائس القواعد، وغرائبُ لطيفة مما ستحسن في المذكورات، ويستحب ذكره في مجالس الجماعات، ويتصل بأحوال القلوب وأمراضها، ويذكر طبّها وعلاجها.
ولأن دار المنهاج تهتم بطباعة كتب هذا الإمام الكبير والمحقق النحرير.. قامت بتحقيق هذا الكتاب غاية التحقيق، وإبرازه بما هو به خليق.
