هذا كتاب يذكر فيه الإمام "ابن شرف النووي" جملاً من نفائس اللطائف، وحقائق المعارف، وينثر فيه نثراً، ليكون أبعد لمطالعة عن الملل، وأقرب للذكرى، ولا يلزم فيه ترتيبه على الأبواب، فإن ذلك كما يقول المصنف يجلب الملل للناظر في الكتاب، ويذكر فيه أيضاً من الآيات الكريمات والأحاديث النبويات، وأقاويل السلف الميزات، ومستجاد المأثور عن الأخيار: من عيون الحكايات، والأشعار المستحسنة الزهديات، ويبين -في أكثر الأوقات- صحة الأحاديث، وحسنها، وحال رواتها، وبيان ما يخفي ويشكل من معانيها، ويضبط ما يحتاج إلى تقييد، حذراً من التصحيف وفراراً من التغيير والتحريف.
ثم إنه يذكر ما يذكره بإسناده فيه، لكونه أوقع في نفوس مطالعيه، وقد يحذف الإسناد للاقتصار وخوفاً من التطويل والإكثار، ولكون هذا الكتاب موضوعاً للمتعبدين، ومن ليسوا إلى معرفة الإسناد بمحتاجين، بل يكرهونه معظم الحالات، لما يلحقهم بسببه من السآمات، وأكثر ما يذكره مما يرويه بالأسانيد المشهورة المعروفة من الكتب الظاهرة المتداولة المعروفة.
