كتاب «منهاج الطالبين وعمدة المفتين» انعقدت الخناصر على تقديمه على ما سواه من المتون؛ لأن فيه من المسائل الفقهية والتحقيق والتدقيق ما يسر به الموفقون، لذا: كان واسطة عقد المتون. أجمع العلماء على تقدمه وسبقه، فانتشر انتشار الضياء، وتتابعت همم العلماء على شرحه ونظمه، واختصاره وتهذيبه، والعناية به من سائر الوجوه، وحسبك أن شراحه فقط نافوا على المئة، وهذا في الحقيقة عائد إلى أمور:
الأول: مكانة مؤلفه بين العلماء، وتبحره في فقه الدين الذي أشاد به النبلاء.
الثاني: صلاح مؤلفه وإخلاصه، وما قيدته كتب التراجمات من بركاته وزهده وورعه فما من طالب شافعي إلا وقرأه، وسامره وذاكر فيه، فألبسه الله حلل القبول والذيوع، ولبس حلة الشيوع، وما قرأه قط طالب قراءة واعية إلا أنجح وارتفع في سلم الفقه شأواً قصياً، حتى شاع قولهم: «من قرأ المنهاج.. هاج».
الثالث: إن الإمام النووي ـ وهو المحقق البارع ـ اختصره من «المحرر» للإمام الرافعي وأضاف إليه مسائل مستجادات. وكتاب تضافر على تحبيره شيخا المذهب.. حريٌّ بأن يلقى هذا الإقبال، ومن قرأه.. فكأنما قرأ من خلاله أصول كتب الشافعية من «المحرر» إلى «الأم».
الرابع: إن الإمام النووي سلك في تأليفه وعرض أقوال المذهب والمعتمد فيه طريقة شائقة فريدة موجزة، لخص فيها طرق الخلاف في كلمات، وأبان في خطبة «المنهاج» عن مصطلحاته، فرفد الطالب بالمعارف الفقهية، والمصطلحات التي انتقاها في سهولة وإيضاح تامَّين، فكان «المنهاج» زبدة الفقه الشافعي، وخلاصة المذهب دون منازع، لا يعتوره التعقيد ولا يعيبه الإيجاز المخل؛ لذلك تلقفه أولو الفقه باستحسان واعتناء كبيرين.
ولما كان لهذا الكتاب شهرته ومكانته في أوساط الفقهاء الشافعيين.. كان من حقه أن يخرج في حلةٍ زاهية تليق بقدره، وتتناسب مع عظمته؛ لأن ذلك أدعى إلى منادمته طويلاً، فجردت دار المنهاج العزم على إخراجه في طبعة علمية محققة، مستمدة هذا التحقيق من الأصول الخطية المعتمدة، بعد التنقيب الجاد، والتجوال في مراكز المخطوطات.. عثرت على عدة نسخ خطية، ومن بينها نسخة عتيقة، تتميز بالأصالة والضبط؛ لأن عليها إجازات بخط علماء مشاهير أمثال الحافظ العراقي وغيره، فكانت نسخة تداولها الحفاظ، وقرأها الفقهاء، وعلق عليها المحققون، فهي جديرة بالاعتبار، إضافة إلى مقابلتها بالنسخ الأخرى استظهاراً.
