فضلاً عن موقعه من هذه التجربة الروحيّة بوصفه بحثاً عن سبل خلاص الصوفيّ من وضعيته الحاضرة المقيدة بنواميس الزمان والمكان والمجتمع والطبيعة ليرتقي حيث مكانته الأصلية المنشودة التي يكون فيها مرآة للألوهية وعلامة عليها، وهو خلاص جسره وعنوانه المحبة، فهي سبب خلقه وهي أداة معراجه وترقيه في الطريق إلى ربّه، وقوّة حضورها فيه تدرك غايتها لحظة "الفناء"، فهي لحظة الصفاء المطلق الذي تنتفي فيه ذات المحب الصوفي لتتلاشى في حضور المحبوب.
وسعينا إلى تتبّع نشأة القول بــ "الفناء" وعوامل تشكّله لتبيّن آليّات إشتغال الفكر الصّوفي وطرائق تفاعله مع لغته ونصوصه التّأسيسيّة ومع روح عصره، ولهذا اعتمدنا مصادر تسمح القرون الهجريّة الخمسة الأولى لكونها شهدت ولادة هذا المصطلح وتركيز دلالاته وتجلياته، ولاحظنا أن طغيان النزّعة الفرديّة في التّجربة الصّوفيّة لم يكن ليخفي نقاطاً مشتركة تجمع أصحابها وخطوطاً كبرى تنحت معالمها مهما حاولت التّستّر على معارفها وأدبيّاتها.
وفي الوقت الذي تعدّدت فيه مقالات أوائل الصوفيّة حول "الفناء" واختلفت فوسمته بالتنوع والثراء في دلالاته ومكوناته لكونها انطلقت من تجربة ذوقيّة معيشة، انصرف المجهود في القرنين الرابع والخامس أكثر نحو التخفيف من حدّة الإختلاف بل نفيه من أجل توحيد دلالته وأبعاده ونحت صورة متناغمة لإصطلاحات الصوفيّة ترقى بها إلى مصاف العلميّة والثبات وتتصدّى للخصوم والمعترضين، بإستدعاء القرآن الكريم والحديث النبوي وإيجاد تأويلات تتناسب مع فكرة "الفناء" وتشرعها وتسندها.
