قمة أدبية ساحقة، وعبقرية شعرية فذة: جوانبها رحبة، نتاجها وفير، أفكارها غزيرة، أسلوبها رصين، ألفاظها دقيقة، خيالها مبدع خلاق. دانت لصاحبها إمارة الشعر، فأتته الشعراء تكرمه في دار الأوبرا في 29 إبريل سنة 1927، وهنأه شاعر النيل، حافظ إبراهيم قائلاً من بين ما قاله: أمير القوافي قد أتيت مبايعاً، وهذي وفود الشرق قد بايعت معي.
هذا هو أمير الشعراء أحمد شوقي، الذي اتسعت عنده دائرة أغراض الشعر، فاهتم بشعر إلى آفاق التاريخ والإسلام، وخص الصغار والنشئ بنصيب متميز من الشعر أخرجه في إطارين: الأول حكايات رمزية نظمها على لسان الحيوان، والثاني مقطوعات شعرية ولجأ في سني عمره الأخير إلى المسرح، فأرسى فيه دعائم الشعر المسرحي.
ومن بين المسرحيات الشعرية التي أبدعها احتوى هذا المجلد من سلسلة "الصفوة" أربعاً هي بالترتيب التاريخى لوقوع أحداثها: "قمبيز"، "مصرع كيلوباترا"، "عنترة"، "مجنون ليلى". وقد وضع الدكتور عبد المنعم عبد الحميد دراسة ممتعة صدر بها المجلد، وفيها ألقى الضوء على شخصية أحمد شوقي، وخصائص شعره، وأفرد لهذه المسرحيات الأربع حديثاً خاصاً أبرز سمات كل ومصادرها، وقام محررو إدارة النشر العربي بالمشاركة بتدقيق النصوص الشعرية، وضبط مفرداتها وشرح ما غمض منها، لقد خلف أحمد شوقي تراثاً شعرياً ضخماً أثار قضايا أدبية عديدة، وبالرغم من اختلاف نتائج هذه القضايا فإن هذا التراث الشعري سيظل حياً، وسيبقى خالداً.
