عنترة بن شداد اسم تتوقف عنده البطولة وتبعث مجدداً كلماً ذكر بعد أن جاءت غبرة الزمان لتكسو صورة المجد الذي ولد يوم مولد البطل، نال عنترة حريته ببسالته، فالحرية، زادته باساً وإقداماً وقد رافقتها شهرة واسعة تشيع في عبس أن عنترة بطلها وسيفها القاطع. وبين الكر والفر والإقدام والإحجام كانت تقف عروس شعره ومالكة قلبه (عبلة) التي حكمت عليه أن يقضي حياته على ظهر جواده لاسترضائها، ومات ولم يفلح برغم المأتى التي سجلها والأسطورة التي كتبها بالسيف والثقاب.
كما تروي سيرته قتيلاً قضى في إحدى غاراته على بني بطئ، ويظهر عنترة في الأسطورة أشد سواداً كما يظهر معيروه ألح في الغلطة وهو البطل المظفر، عكاز العاجز وسيف المظلوم، والطماح الذي يبذل كل شيء لأجل المجد المخلد، وبين دفتي هذا الكتاب ديوانه كاملاً ويقصد بكامل كافة الأبيات التي نسبها البعض لعنترة بالإضافة إلى البيات التي تم التأكد من نسبتها له.
ولما كان هذا الديوان مرجعاً أدبياً للباحث والمؤلف، والناقد والطالب، ولن يشغل بال أحد من هؤلاء معرفة قافية هذه القصائد أو تلك بمقدار ما يهمهم تتبع الشاعر في غير فن وغرض أدبي. ومن هنا كلن اختيار معد الديوان أن يبوب قصائد بحسب الفن والغرض الذي جاء به في بداية الديوان تم إثبات معلقة عنترة، ومن ثم تم جمع كافة الأبيات المتعلقة بـ: فروسية عنترة، فخرياته، وجدانياته، غزله.
