منذ أُجبرتُ على مغادرة بلدي الأم سورية في عام 2007 بدأ يشغلني هاجس إمكانية تحقيق التحوّل الديموقراطي في بلداننا العربية عموماً وفي سورية خصوصاً.
قادني هذا التفكير إلى زيارة أكثر من خمسين بلداً في أميركا اللاتينية وأوروبا الشرقية والغربية وأفريقيا للإستفادة من تجاربها في التحول الديموقراطي، والتعرف إلى قصص نجاحها وفشلها والدروس التي يمكن تعلمها من تجارب هذه الدول.
وأطّلعتُ على أفكار وتجارب رواد التحول الديموقراطي في العالم من جين شارب، الذي استقيت منه معظم الأفكار الواردة في هذا الكتاب، إلى غاندي ولوثر كينغ وغيرهم، وصولاً إلى ثورات الربيع العربي التي لمّا تكتمل بعد، أو تنتقل من الدكتاتورية والإستبداد العائلي أو الحزبي إلى بناء الديموقراطية.
يخوض الكتاب في كل هذه التجارب مستخلصاً ما يمكن الإستعانة به في تجربتنا الحالية وأهمها سليمةٌ عمليات التحول أو الثورات وأخلاقياتها، وطرق نجاحها - واضعاً نصب عيني، منذ البداية ما علّمنا إياه شارب، وهو أن التخطيط لمرحلة ما بعد سقوط النظام يجب بحثه ودراسته في وقت مبكر والإعداد له جيداً.
