بعد أن نفرع عن الأصول العقائديّة المهمّة: التوحيد، والنبوّة، والمعاد، تأتي قضيّة الإعتقاد بإمامة الأئمّة الإثني عشر من أهل بيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، التي تعتبر من أهمّ الأسس العقائدية عند الشيعة الإماميّة، وذلك ضمن شروط وخصائص معيّنة، والمسألة المهمّة التي يتطرأ الشيعة إليها في قضيّة الإمامة - بعد الإعتقاد بأصل بالإمامة - هو موضوع إنحصار عدد الأئمّة بإثني عشر إماماً.
وهذا الكتاب يصب في إطار هذا الهدف، حيث يبحث إحدى أهم القضايا العقائدية عند الشيعة الإثني عشرية، وهي الإعتقاد بالأئمّة الإثني عشر من أهل البيت عليهم السلام كخلفاء لنبي الإسلام صلى الله عليه وسلم، فللإعتقاد بإثني عشر خليفة لنبي الإسلام صلى الله عليه وسلم جذور راسخة في المصادر الروائيّة عند الفريقين، ويعتقد الشيعة أنّ مصاديق هؤلاء الخلفاء الإثني عشر هم الأئمّة من أهل البيت عليهم السلام بناءً على أدلّة لديهم، في حين أنّ هناك خلافاً بين السنّة في هذا المجال، حيث عدّدوا مصاديق مختلفة لهذا العنوان.
