يتناول هذا الكتاب الأسس النظرية لرؤية أدورنو الجمالية، وملامح هذه الرؤية، في الموسيقى والأدب والشعر، فإذا كان جوهر المدرسة فرانكفورت هو النقد بمفهومه الشامل، بمعنى نقد الإنسان، والمجتمع والثقافة، والأنظمة السياسية، والفكر الإنساني .. فإن أدورنو اعترف بأن فلسفته عبارة عن محاولات لتغيير الواقع، وقد فشلت هذه المحاولات، لأن العقل قد هُزم أمام السلطة التي استغلت العقل الإنساني، وأبعدته عن دوره الحقيقي ليتحول إلى أداة لتحقيق المصالح، إن أدورنو يشعرنا بمرارة الخذلان أمام الواقع .. فالمجتمع الإنساني تيسير بلا عقلانية تعوق العقل عن أداء دوره في نقد الواقع وتطويره، ولذلك فإن لجوءه إلى ميدان الفن والنظرية الجمالية كان عن قناعة كاملة بعدم إمكانية الحلم إلا من خلال الفن، لأنه الملجأ الأخير لإنسان هذا العصر.
ولهذا فإن تقديم جماليات أدورنو تكشف لنا عن البعد الآخر في الثقافة الغربية، أو تقدم لنا ثقافة الظل في الغرب، لأن الغرب ليس ثقافة واحدة، وإنما عدة ثقافات متصارعة،ـ وتقديم الفكر الغربي بشكل علمي، يساعدنا في عدم الإنسياق وراءه، وإنما يعني قراءة قضايا الأنا من خلال الآخر ...
محتويات الكتاب: الفصل الأول: علم الجمال لدى النظرية النقدية، الفصل الثاني: الأسس الفلسفية لنظرية أدورنو الجمالية، الفصل الثالث: فلسفة أدورنو النقدية، الفصل الرابع: الفن والحياة المعاصرة، الفصل الخامس: نظرية الاستطيقا، الفصل السادس: استطيقا الفنون، وأخيراً موقف أدورنو من مفهوم الحداثة.
