تأخذ هذه الترجمة من حيث أهميتها بعداً معرفياً حيث يغدو التعرف إلى تاريخ وأفكار مدرسة فرانكفورت ضرورة أساسية لتكوين وعي نقدي يحتاجه الواقع الراهن، خاصة وأن هذه المدرسة لم تأخذ حظّها الواجب من الدراسة والبحث في الكتابة العربية، إن على مستوى الحقل الفلسفي أو السوسيولوجي. ولعل ما يزيد أهمية ترجمة هذا الكتاب، أن صاحبه، توم بوتومور، له وجهة نظر خاصة فيما قدمته هذه المدرسة، حين اعتبر نظريتها النقدية، شكلاً من أشكال النظرية الاجتماعية المنفصلة بالتدريج عن الماركسية، وأنها مثلت تياراً واحداً فقط من الفكر، في إطار حركة التجديد النقدي العريض للنظريات الماركسية والراديكالية، وأن مكانها في التطور اللاحق لمثل هذه النظريات، موضع جدال. لقد لعبت مدرسة فرانكفورت طاقة استيعاب ملابسات مستجدة، ورسخت عبر مشروعها، تقاليد مهمة في الفلسفة النقدية، وعلم اجتماع المعرفة، والتربية واللغة، والأدب والفن، وعلم النفس. فالفكر كالحرية، لا يتلوّن، تلك مقولة سيارة، ولكن رحلة هذا المشروع منذ كتابات هوركايمر وادورنو إلى تنويعاتها في أعمال اللاحقين، تقول أنها تحافظ، ولم تزل، على فاعليتها، لذا تبرز الحاجة إلى قراءة هذه المدرسة وروادها وأعمالهم قراءة متبصرة وناقدة. وهذا ما تتيح الدراسة التي جاءت في هذا الكتاب.
