يدور موضع الكتاب حول الحياة السياسية للإمام الحسن رضي الله عنه في عهد الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم والخلفاء الثلاثة بعده، حيث يسلط مؤلفه الضوء على مجمل المواقف والأحداث التي عاشها الإمام والظروف التي رافقته مع أخيه الإمام الحسين رضي الله عنه والمسؤوليات التي وقعت على عاتقه اتجاه الله واتجاه أمته الإسلامية.
يبدأ الكتاب بمشاهد من حياته رضي الله عنه في كنف جده المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم حيث كان يقول: "لقد كنت أتبعه إتباع الفصيل أثر أمه، يرفع لي في كل يوم من أخلاقه علماً، ويأمرني بالإقتداء به ..."، وأما في حياته رضي الله عنه في عهد الخلفاء الثلاثة بعد وفاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فكانت تتميز بالحكمة والسلوك القويم ودرء دماء المسلمين وبخاصة في عهد الأمويين. وفي هذا السياق يورد المؤلف لقطات من الحياة السياسية والإجتماعيةو للدولة الإسلامية مسندة بالروايات الشريفة وأحاديث أهل بيت النبوة والأئمة الكرام والكتب المعتبرة.
وأخيراً يقول المؤلف: وفإن هذه الموجزة، قد تكون قادرة – ولو جزئياً – على رسم صورة تكاد تكون واضحة عن الحياة السياسية للإمام الحسن عليه الصلاة والسلام. كما أنها يمكن أن تساعد بشكل فعّال في الحصول على تصورٍ – ولو محدود – عن بعض التيارات والمناحي السياسية لتلك الفترة ...".
