يحمل الكاتب والإعلامي المخضرم "عادل مالك"، بكتابه هذا، القارئ من تعقيدات السياسة في أيامنا، ويزرعه في منتصف الخمسينات من القرن الماضي، ويجعله يعيش، لحظة بلحظة، تطور الأحداث حتى وقوع الإنفجار، ويمكّنه، في الوقت عينه، من إكتشاف جذور بعض عناصر الأزمة اللبنانية التي لا تزال قائمة في العديد من أوجهها.
تبدو الأحداث المتسارعة التي يستعرضها الكاتب، بالشفافية والموضوعية والدقة التي اشتهر بها، أشبه بعناصر ملهاة تراجيدية تجعل القارئ يتساءل عما لو كان بإمكان "أبطال" تلك المرحلة تفاديها، وتجنيب لبنان - الدولة الديمقراطية الوحيدة الناشئة في منطقة الشرقين الأوسط والأدنى آنذاك - مضاعفاتها التي لم يسلم منها، على رغم النيات الحسنة للأطراف السياسيين المعبّر عنها بشعارات مثل "لا غالب ولا مغلوب"، فامتدادات أزمة 1958 - وفق الأسرار التي يميط الكتاب اللثام عنها لأول مرة - المتشعبة إقليمياً ودولياً، تجعل معظم "أبطال الثورة" كما يسميهم الأستاذ "مالك"، أبطالاً ثانويين غير مدركين حقيقة لكامل معطيات الأزمة.
إنه كتاب شهادة عن مرحلة ظن كثيرون أنها انتهت، لكنها بجوهرها أو، على الأقل، في بعض وجوهها لا تزال مستمرة، إلى أن يتفق اللبنانيون حقيقة حول مضامين التجربة أو الفكرة اللبنانية.
