معجم العين أثر عربيَ جليل، ومصَنف لغوي حفيل، ومصدر من مصادر اللغة العربية الأولى الذي يمثَل أوَل معجم بالمعنى العلمي الدقيق ظهر في تاريخ الحضارة العربية الإسلامية، بل في تاريخ الحضارات الإنسانية جميعاً، استوفى فيه الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي البصري (ت175هـ) كلم اللغة العربية شرحاً، وبياناً، ودلالة على وفق منهج (صوتي كميَ تقليبي) لم يسبق إليه أحد من قبله، استطاع بن أن يتحكم بطاقات اللغة العربية على خلق الألفاظ العربية على تعدَد أبنيتها، واشتقاقاتها، وأصولها، بحيث لا تفلت من بين يديه كلمةٌ عربية جرت، أو يمكن أن تجري على السنة العرب.
وفي (العين) درس صرفي معَمق، وفيه أيضاً مقصد نحوي يمثل بعض جهد الخليل في هذا العلم الذي يعدَ الخليل أحد أعمدته الشامخة أستاذ
