نبذة النيل والفرات: لا شك في أن العلاقات بين الظواهر اللغوية والظواهر الإجتماعية، وتأثر اللغة بالعادات والتقاليد والنظام الإجتماعي في زمان ومكان معينين قائمة منذ أنْ وُجدت اللغة، ووجدت الحياة الإجتماعية، فجوهر الإنسان إنّما يكمنُ في لغته وحساسيته وحياته الإجتماعية. والنظر في هذه العلاقات قديم لا ريب، غير أنّه لم يستوِ كمَّاً ونوعاً وتنظيراً، ومنهجاً، ورواداً إلا في عصرنا الحاضر في ظل علم جديد من علوم اللغة أطلق عليه (علم اللغة الإجتماعي) (Sociological Linguistics) أو (Sociolinguistics). وبين يدي القارئ بحثٌ في هذا العلم حاول المؤلف فيه التعريف به والوقوف على ملامحه الأولى في الدراسات الإنسانية، مندرجاً مع تطور الأفكار التي تصبّ في مصبّه، مستعرضاً إياها في نموها، وإرتقائها، وتعددها بتعدد أصحابها، وتنوّع مشاربهم الفكرية، وهو أيضاً محاولة لرصد ما في تراثنا العربي في مجلى من الدرس اللغوي الإجتماعي للوقوف على ما قدّمه اللغويون العرب في هذا الميدان. وبناءً عليه، توزع البحث على أربعة عشر مبحثاً تندرج في فصول خمسة وفق ما يلي: الفصل الأول: "علم اللغة الإجتماعي"، الفصل الثاني: "اللغة: نشأتها، وظيفتها، وطبيعتها الإجتماعية"، الفصل الثالث: "جمع اللغة وتطورها وصراعها مع اللغات الأخرى"، الفصل الرابع: "وسائل التواصل غير اللغوية"، الفصل الخامس: المستويات اللغوية ونظرية السياق".
