يتربّع سيبويه بكتابه الشهير منذ أكثر من اثني عشر قرناً من الزمان على قمّة النحو العربي من غير منازع، لصنيعه الفدّ في إرساء معالم النحو العربي وأنظمته وقوانينه المركزية، فكتاب سيبويه لا يزال إلى يومنا هذا المصدر الأول والأهم من بين أمّات كتب النحو، سواء في محتواه الموضوعي، أو في منهجه، أو تقسيماته، أو في طريقة سيبويه المحكمة، والمثبّتة، والدقيقة في التحليل اللغوي، إبتداء من الألفاظ والعبارات والتراكيب التي كتب بها سيبويه كتابه وإنتهاء بالمصطلحات، والمفاهيم، والقوانين، والشواهد والأمثلة وغيرها من الأسس التي اعتمدها في بناء الكتاب ممَّا لم يأتِ شيء منها عبثاً، أو إطناباً.
ولكون هذا الكتاب الفدّ هو الأساس المعتمد عليه عند النحويين القدماء والمتأخرين والمحدثين، وسيبقى كذلك، فقد كنتُ أحرص على أنَّ أكلّف طلبتي في مرحلتي الماجستير والدكتوراه بقراءة بعض الموضوعات الصوتية والصرفية والنحوية التي عرض لها سيبويه، وأشد ما كان يثير إستغرابي ودهشتي أنَّ أكثر هؤلاء الطلبة لم يكونوا قادرين على التعرّف عمَّا يتحدّث فيه سيبويه، وكأنَّهم يقرأون كتاباً في لغة لا يعرفونها، وكنتُ اعتذر لهم ولنفسي لذلك، لما في الكتاب من مصطلحات ومفاهيم، وتعريفات، وأسلوب لغوي خاص بسيبويه نفسه، يُلزم القارئ أنَّ يقلّب العبارة و"الجملة والشاهد" والمثال على وجوه متعدّدة كي يثقف على طروحات سيبويه ومقاصده.
