هذا الكتاب "الفهرست" لمؤلفه محمد بن إسحاق المعروف بإبن أبي يعقوب النديم، (ت 380ه) وهو من أهم الكتب الببيلوغرافية، يقدمه الدكتور عبد الرحمن المرعشلي بعد التحقيق والتدقيق في مضامينه. و "الفهرست" كتاب موسوعي للتراجم وأسماء الكتب، بين مؤلفه الهدف من إعداده فقال: "هذا فهرست كتب جميع الأمم من العرب والعجم الموجودة منها بلغة العرب وقلمها في أصناف العلوم، وأخبار مصنفيها، وطبقات مؤلفيها وأنسابهم، وتاريخ مواليدهم ومبلغ أعمارهم، وأوقات وفاتهم، وأماكن بلدانهم، ومناقبهم، ومثالبهم، منذ ابتداء كل علم اختُرع إلى عصرنا هذا وهو سنة وسبع وسبعين وثلاثمائة للهجرة".
يقول الكاتب عبد الستار الحلوجي عن هذا الكتاب"ويكاد ينعقد إجماع الباحثين على أن "فهرست" النديم هو أول عمل ببليوجرافي في اللغة العربية". كما يعتبر هذا الكتاب صورة حقيقية لحياة رجل عمل كوراق في سوق بغداد، حيث كان يهتم برؤية الكتب ونسخها بالأجرة ثم بيعها بعد تقييمها، وقد سمحت له مهنة "الوراقة" بالإطلاع على كتب كثيرة.
وللفهرست قيمة علمية كبرى حيث غطى تأليف الكتب والنشاط الثقافي في القرون الهجرية الأربعة الأولى، وسجل لنا الحركة العلمية عند المسلمين في عصره، وما قبله تسجيلاً حصرياً، بحيث أبقى لنا على ذكر مؤلفات لولاه لم نكن نعرف عنها شيئاً. ولهذا اشتدت عناية أهل العلم به قديماً وحديثاً، ومنهم محقق الكتاب الدكتور المرعشلي الذي استند على نسختين خطيتين منه من إحدى المؤسسات العلمية (الماجد)، فعمل على التقديم للكتاب بذكر ترجمة لإبن النديم، وتصنيف العلوم وذكر أهم المكتبات في الإسلام فيما مضى وتبيان أهدافها مع دراسة كتاب "الفهرست"، وذكر مطبوعاته ومخطوطاته، كما اهتم بتخريج الآيات القرىنية من المصحف الشريف، وكذلك تخريج الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، وترقيم التراجم والتعريف بها بذكر مصدرٍ واحدٍ فقط، وشرح غريب اللغة، ثم التعريف بأهم الفرق والجماعات، ووضع الفهارس الضرورية للكتاب مثل فهرس التراجم، وفهرس الكتب وغيرها.
