يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن سيرة الشاعر "خليل حاوي" وعن مذهبه الشعري مستعرضاً بعض المختارات من قصائده: البحار والدرويش بعد الجليد، الناي والريح، السندباد في رحلته الثامنة، لعازر عام 1962، رسالة الغفران.
لعل الثقافة الواسعة والعميقة التي تميز خليل حاوي أكسبت شعره خصوصية وتفرداً بين التجارب الشعرية العربية المعاصرة. وقد كان حاوي خلال دراسته الجامعية كلها مهتماً اهتماماً بالغاً بالفكر والفلسفة. وكان متردداً بين التخصص في الفلسفة أو الاتجاه نحو الأدب. لكن ميله الجارف نحو الشعر قرر اتجاهه، فغلّب الأدب على الفلسفة في دراسته.
وكانت السنوات الثلاث التي أمضاها في كيمبريدج من أخصب مراحل حياته الثقافية، فقد وضع فيها أطروحة باللغة الإنكليزية عن جبران خليل جبران، وتابع دروساً في الفنون المختلفة والآداب الأوروبية والأدب المقارن والفكر. واستطاع في هذه الفترة أن يطور تجربته الشعرية وتعبيره الشعري. وحين عاد إلى لبنان كانت شهرته قد ترسخت وغدا واحداً من رواد الشعر الحديث.
