إنما الشاعر ضمير الأمة وعيها المتوهج لذاتها في كفه تلك الذات وفي أحلامها، ولآخر في حوارها مع الآخر وتفاعيلها معه، وللزمن في استمراريته التاريخية وفي مضامينه الإبداعية وذراه الفنية. هكذا أدرك خليل حاوي دور الشاعر في عصره وفي مجتمع. حمل همّ الأمة واكتوى بآلامها وانتشى بآمالها، فكان الشاعر المتميز بامتلاك حسّ حضاري ينطوي على إدراك نافذة للواقع بكل مستوياته، وعل وعي خاص للتاريخ في تواصله تحوّلاته، وعلى استيعاب معمّق للتراث الثقافي القومي والإنساني بتجلياته الفنية والفكرية. إن هذا الوعي الحاد للواقع وللتاريخ وللتراث هو من أبرز مميزات القصيدة العربية الحديثة، وحاوي أعظم روّادها، نقلها نقلة نوعية إلى معانقة الكلّي العام والإحاطة بالجزئي الخاص وتجسيدهما في عبارة رمزية فنية سلمت مما ابتليت به القصيدة الرومنطيقية من ذاتية مغلفة، وانطلقت إلى التعبير عن الحلم القومي وعن المسألة الإنسانية والقضية الحضارية، وظلت، مع ذلك مغروسة في جسد الشاعر وفي صلب واقعه. وكانت تلك النقلة وما رفدها وأدى إليها من وعي، جوهر معنى الحداثة في الشعر العربي في القرن العشرين.
بهذا المعنى العميق للحداثة في الشعر، المتجاوز التعريفات المتلهية بالتحولات الشكلية في القصيدة، يشمخ خليل حاوي رائداً وفذاً من رواد الشعر الحديث، ويبرز نتاجه الشعري علامة مضيئة في خريطة الشعر العربي. ذلك الإبداع الشعري المتميز، كان تعبيراً فنياً رائعاً عن رؤية نافذة وتجربة شرعية عميقة وبعيدة الأمداء تجلتا في دواوينه الخمسة، التي حفلت بها صفحات هذا الكتاب، وهي: نهر الرماد (1957)، والناي والريح (1961)، وبيادر الجوع (1965)، والرعد الجريح، ومن جحيم الكوميديا (1979). وقد سبقت قصائد هذه الدواوين مقدمة تحدثت فيها الدكتورة ريتا عوض عن خليل حاوي الشاعر الرائد للقصيدة الحديثة والذي أعاد للشعر دوره الحضاري.
