لا شك أن الإطلاع على الآداب الغربية والتعرف على المذاهب الأدبية المختلفة كانا حافزاً كبيراً دفع بعض أدباء العربية إلى كسر طوق القديم والانطلاق نحو التجديد والتحديث. وظلت تيارات التجديد المختلفة تتفاعل وتنتشر وتكتسب لنفسها مزيداً من المؤيدين، وتشكل تحدياً كبيراً لدعاة تقليد القديم في كل بقعة من بقاع العالم العربي. فظهرت في تونس حركة تجديد شعرية تحدت الأنماط التقليدية القديمة وأوجدت تياراً شعرياً جديداً تأثر بالمدرسة المهجرية وبجماعة الديوان، وكان أبو القاسم الشابي رائد حركة ذلك التجديد في الشعر العربي في تونس، فاندفع في الاتجاه الرومنطيقي الذي سار فيه الشعر العربي إبان تلك الفترة. ولدى قراءة هذا الكتاب نتبين إلى أي مدى استطاع الشابي أن يؤثر في هذا التيار الجديد الذي أطلقوا عليه اسم "الرومنطيقية".
