"انقشع الهزيع الأخير من الليل وبان خيط أحمر شفيف قادماً من خلل الظلام، أصبح الهواء طرياً خفيفاً، شعرت بجفني ثقيلين ووجهي بارداً. توقفت منعطف، لكي أحدد عزف الرصاص الذي انهمر بغتة وكاد يقترب فيغمرني ذلك الإيقاع الرتيب حيناً قبل أن يبتعد ثانية. قطعت محلتي "الزيتونة" و"الفنادق الكبرى" حتى دنوت من خط التماس. تطلعت إلى حيث يختبئ القناص ربما هو نائم الآن في هذه الساعة المبكرة... ابتعدت عن بقايا الفنادق واتجهت إلى البحر... فجأة فاض البحر، غسل وجه المدينة. شعرت برعشة برد سمت بين أضلاعي. وبعد حين أبصرت امرأة طويلة الشعر خرجت من خلال خرابة، مرقت من أمامي دون أن تلتفت لي، كان وجهها بسيطاً مصبوغاً بحجرة ذهبية، وجه شديد الألفة، خطفت أمامي بثقة كما لو أنها تعرفني.
لا أحد هنا لا يعرف الآخر. اتجهت المرأة صوب البحر واتكأت على سياجه وتطلعت في المدى الذي صبغته تباشير الصباح بضوء رمادي. خطوت بمحاذاة البحر، أخذت أصغر لحن أغنية. اقتربت من المرأة، سألتها إن كانت وحيدة، لكنها ابتعدت عني دون أن تتكلم. ثم دوّى البحر، زبداً وريحاً بيضاء. خفقتني حفتة ريح، فأصابني الانفعال. شعرت بشيء كالحزن يحفر طريقه إلى قلبي، فأخرجت مسدسي وأطلق رصاصة في ضباب الفجر وتعقبت دويها الذي انشطر بين الفناءات المهجورة والبحر، ثم حل صمت من جديد. شعرت بلذة في روحي. (لا بد إذاً طلقة أخرى)، قلت في نفسي، (لعلني أنتشلها من المتاهة).
