"ذات صفى استدعى مصلح كنعان الزوبعي لمقابلة قائمقام قضاء سامراء في شأن حكومي، مثلما جاء في الدعوة الشفوية التي استلمها مصلح من السائق الشخصي للقائمقام. وعندما سأل الزوبعي عن محتوى الدعوة أبدى السائق امتعاضه وتأفف قبل أن يقول: "ماكو داعي للكلام الزايد، السيد القائمقام يريد يشوفك وخلص"، كان السائق يرتبط بصلة قرابة مع القائمقام، لا يعرف أحد مقدار درجتها، وإلا أنه كان يتصرف أحياناً وكأنه ابن عم له، في الوقت الذي كانت فيه درجة القرابة بين مصلح والسيد وذنان صالح الشمري قائمقام قضاء سامراء، أكثر عمقاً، وربما أكثر أهمية من علاقة السائق به، ليس لأنهما عديلان، بل وذلك هو المهم في واقع الأمر، لأن أبا مصلح، الشيخ كنعان، كان زعيماً بلا منازع لعشيرة آل زوبع البدوية الشديدة البأس والتي التحق معظم أفرادها بطائفة الشيعة في الجنوب ورحلوا إلى أطراف الكوفة وكربلاء، ساعين إلى التقرب من مراقد "العترة الطاهرة" مثلما أعلن زعيم الانشقاق آنذاك "الشيخ آل سريح" صراحة وعلى رؤوس الأشهاد".
