موضوع هذا الكتاب (أوليات الإمام علي) والأوليات جمع الأولية، والنسبة إلى الأول، والمراد بها الفضيلة التي تفرد بها الإمام علي، أو سبق بها غيره (قال بعض أصحاب النبي: لقد كان لعلي بن أبي طالب من السوابق ما لو أن سابقة واحدة منها بين الخلائق لو سعتهم خيراً). وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع "شاكر هادي شكر" من كتب الحديث والسيرة النبوية وتراجم الصحابة وكتب التاريخ والأدب هذه الأوليات المتعلقة بأمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب وقد بلغت (تسعة وخمسين) فصلاً، ختم كل فصل بقصيدة أو مقطعات من مدائح الشعراء لصحاب الأوليات وكان معظمها مما يناسب الموضوع، وإنتهى المؤلف بفصل ضم نتفاً من أقوال الشخصيات غير الإسلاميَة فيه وبذلك بلغت فصوله (ستين فصلاً) في مناقبيه أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام.
من أوليات الإمام علي التي ضمها الكتاب نذكر: 1- أول مولود في الكعبة، 2- أول السابقين إلى الإسلام، 3- أول من صلى مع النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، 4- أول تلميذ للنبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، 5- أول من بايع النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، 6- أول كتَاب الوحي، 7- أول من سمي بالوصي (...)، 59- أول من ولد في مسجد وقتل في مسجد.
