إن موضوع التصحّر له أهمية خاصة في الوطن العربي بالنظر لمحدودية المتاح من كميات المياه وطبقاً للمؤشر الذي يفضي إلى أن أي بلد يقل فيه متوسط نصيب الفرد فيه من المياه سنوياً عن 1000- 2000 متر مكعب يعتبر بلداً يعاني من ندرة ماشؤة، وبناءً على ذلك فإن 13 بلداً عربياً تقع ضمن فئة البلدان ذات الشحّة المائية منذ أواخر القرن الماضي أي القرن العشرين بينما اليوم ونحن في العقد الثاني من القرن الحادي والعشرين أصبح عدد الدول العربية التي شملتها ندرة المياه أو شحّتها أكثر من 15 بلداً وهنالك بلدان عربية أخرى مرشحة لتضاف على الخمسة عشر بلداً.
لقد تم التحذير من خطورة التدهور المستمر للأراضي الزراعية وعمليات إزالة الغابات والغطاء الأخضر وتعرية الأراضي الصالحة للزراعة المتزامنة مع الزيادة المستمرة في إعداد السكان وما تفرضه من تحد كبير فيما يتعلق بضرورة تحقيق الأمن الغذائي والمائي.
أي أن إستمرار خطر التصحر على هذا النحو سيؤدي إلى إنكماش نصيب الفرد من الأراضي الصالحة للزراعة إلى أكثر من أربعة أعشار بالمائة هكتار فقط في عام 2012 في مقابل ثمانية وخمسة الأعشار بالمائة من الهكتار للفرد الواحد عام 2008.
ولأهمية هذا الموضوع وتأثيره على حياة الفرد ومستقبله، تناوله الدكتور عماد الحفيظ في هذا الكتاب وذلك بغية تسليط المزيد من الضوء على هذا الموضوع الحيوي وإقتراح سبل المعالجة، وقد تم تقسيم الكتاب على ستة فصول وفق ما يلي: الفصل الأول: "نبذة تاريخية عن دور حضارات بلاد الرافدين في التوسع الزراعي ومواجهة التصحر"، الفصل الثاني: "شحّة المياه وتحديّاتها"، الفصل الثالث: "التصحّر والزحف الصحراوي"، الفصل الرابع: "الجفاف من أهم عوامل الزحف الصحراوي"، الفصل الخامس: "العواصف الرملية أسبابها وتأثيراتها على الزراعة"، الفصل السادس: "دور معالجة المياه العادمة في مواجهة شحّة المياه والتصحّر".
