الحقائق السكانية، في مجاليها الديمغرافي والجغرافي، التي تجسد نمو السكان - وعناصر هذا النمو - وتركيبهم وتوزيعهم في المكان، تشكل جانباً مهما بين شواغل المجتمع المعاصر. ولئن انكب عليها الجغرافي أو الديمغرافي أو الإقتصادي أو عالم الإجتماع وأولاها الإهتمام فهو على حق، لأنها تخدم حركة الحياة، بقدر ما تخدم تطلع هذه الحركة إلى ما هو أفضل إقتصادياً وحضارياً.
وقد تفصح هذه الحقائق عن نمط معين من النمو وتركيب يجلب الإنتباه قد تفرضه ظروف عالمنا المعاصر الذي يسير بخطى سريعة وتغير سريع في تقنياته وتأثيرها على مسيرة الأبحاث الأكاديمية في مختلف تخصصاتها ومنها جغرافية السكان، وعندئذ يجد الباحث فرصاً مفيدة لكي يتجاوز في بحثه الرؤية التي تكشف عن تباين توزيع السكان، ويعكف على إدراك سلبيات سوء التوزيع السكاني وإيجابياته.
وهل غير ذلك سبيل لكي يتلمس الباحث الجغرافي العلاقة بين التوزيع السكاني والكثافات والحقائق السكانية الأخرى من ناحية، وحركة الحياة مصالحها الحياتية من ناحية أخرى؟ هذه الحركة وتلك المصالح فرضت نفسها فخصصت بعض حكومات العالم حقيبة وزارية للسكان وجعلت هدف خططها التنموية الإنسان، أينما كان وفي أي بقعة من بقاع الأرض.
أما هذه الدراسة فقد حدت حيزها المكاني بقعة من الأرض عدت من أخطر بقاع العالم فيما تشغله من موقع سوقي (ستراتيجي) يمثل قلب العالم ويربط قاراته القديمة بجسور برية وبحرية وقنوات مائية... ألا وهي الوطن العربي، هذه البقعة التي تمتد من شواطئ المحيط الأطلسي غرباً إلى شواطئ الخليج العربي الشرقية وحدود إيران شرقاً، ومن مشارف جبال طوروس والبحر الممتوسط في الشمال، إلى الحدود الجنوبية لأقطار المغرب العربي والسودان والصومال في أعماق القارة الأفريقية في الجنوب، بإمتداد أفقي هندسي طوله نحو 5000 كم أو 75 درجة طولية، وعرضه من الشمال إلى الجنوب في حدود 3000 كم أو 37 دائرة عرضية.
وهذا المؤلف تناول في قسمه الأول إحدى عشر فصلاً، الملامح الديمغرافية والخصائص الجغرافية لسكان الوطن العربي، وفي قسمه الثاني، أربعة فصول، تناول أبحاث تطبيقية في جغرافية السكان عوملت كأبحاث مستقلة من حيث وجود مقدمة وخاتمة وملاحق وفي ترتيب المصادر، وبعض المواضيع التي تناولها هذا المؤلف سبق نشره، ولكي يستفيد منها القارئ أدرج ضمن هذا الكتاب بعد تحديثه وإعادة صياغة فقراته.
