قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: الخيل معقود في نواصيها الخير إلى يوم القيامة، وقد بلغ من عناية العرب بالخيول واهتمامهم بها أن عنوا بأنسابهم وأنسالها وعملوا على تجويدها. كما ذكروها في أشعارهم وافتخروا بامتلاكها. ولا شك أن كل الأمم قد اهتمت بالخيول وإن بدرجات مختلفة من الاهتمام، لقد عرف الإنسان الخيل منذ آلاف السنين، فالمصريون القدماء استخدموها في القرن التاسع عشر قبل الميلاد عند غزو المجوس لمصر ويمكن الذهاب بعيداً في تبتع تاريخ نشأة الحصان إلى فترة تزيد عن الستين مليون سنة.
وقد رجح العلماء أن يكون الحصان قد وجد بشكل الحالي في آسيا وأمريكا وأوروبا وانتشر من هناك إلى سائر المناطق ، وللهواة ومحبي الفروسية بالدرجة الأولى يقدم المؤلف هذا الكتاب الذي تحدث في فصوله التسعة كل ما يتعلق بالخيول وسلالاتها وصفاتها وأمراضها، وكيفية رعايتها، كما عقد فصلاً للحديث عن الخيول العربية وعما يميزها عن سلالات الخيول في العالم.
إذ يتميز الحصان العربي بألوانه الزاهية كاللون الأدهم، والأدهم الحالك والأهم الجون، والأدهم الأصم والأحوى. كما يعتبر الحصان العربي في أعلى درجات الأصالة من حيث جمال الشكل الخارجي، وهو شديد الاعتماد على نفسه ولا يتطلب مزيداً من العناية.
