"الملاحظ أن المكتبة العربية في العصر الحديث تفتقر لمصادر عربية متخصصة في دراسة الخيل"، من هذا المنطلق، ولأجل ملء هذا النقص والرد على هذه الحاجة، قدّم المؤلف هذا الكتاب الذي يتضمن دراسة شاملة عن الخيول العربية، في اثني عشر فصلاً، يبدأها بلمحة تاريخية عن الخيل التي سبق وجودها "وجود الإنسان بملايين السنين"، والتي "اختلف العلماء عن تحديد موطنها الأصلي"، وبفكرة عامة عن استئناسها في المنطقة العربية، حيث أن الحقيقة الثابتة "التي لا لبس فيها ولا جدل بأن إسماعيل بن إبراهيم (عليهما السلام) هو أول من دجّن الخيل تدجيناً كاملاً..". "وقد بلغ اعتزاز العرب بخيلهم الغاية القصوى، وقد تمثل هذا الاعتزاز بأسمى معانيه في تجويع أنفسهم لغرض إشباع الخيل".
يجد القارئ ثلاثة فصول عن: الخيل في الإسلام" وقد "حثّ الشرع الإسلامي المسلمين على تربية الخيل العربية والاهتمام بها"، وعن الخيل في الأدب العربي الذي تغنى بالفرس وخيّالها، كهذا البيت لأمرؤ القيس: "كأن غلامي إذ علا خال متنه، على ظهر باز في السماء محلق"، والخيل عند البدو الذين كانوا يولون لها أهمية كبيرة في حياتهم، بحيث "شرعت العشائر البدوية قوانين وأنظمة"، في التعامل معها.
كما خصص فصلين عن أنواع الخيل وقد صنفها العرب الأوائل إلى "ثلاثة مجاميع: العراب، والعجميات والمولدات"، ويبلغ عددها في العالم في الوقت الحاضر حوالي 59 مليون رأساً، يمتلك العالم العربية منها نصف مليون رأس، واستخدامها، لأغراض الفروسية، والعسكرية، وللتجارة والصيد والركوب والنقل وجرّ العربات وللعز والفخر.
يبحث الكتاب أيضاً في طرق تربية وإدارة الخيل، كتحديد موقع الاسطبلات، ومواصفاتها العامة كتهوئتها وإضاءتها والمعالف والمناهل وما إلى ذلك، كما يبحث في ترويضها، وتكاثرها. ويخصص فصلاً لفحص الخيل المريضة، وللأمراض المعدية التي تصيب الخيل، نظراً لما يتضمنه هذا الموضوع من أهمية.
