يتوجه هذا الكتاب لصاحب السمو الإمبراطوري الأمير ديمتري قسطنطنوفيتش العظيم، الذي أخذ على عاتقه مهمة استعادة التقاليد المجيدة لتربية الخيول في روسيا، التي نشأت في عهد الإمبراطورة كاثرين الثانية (1762-1786م)، بمبادرة من الكونت أورلوف تشيسمينسكي (أول من أنتج نسل خيول أورلوف الروسية من خلال فحل عربي "سميتانكا" في سفاد فرس هولندية). إن هذه التقاليد المتمثلة في المبادئ التي سيناقشها هذا الكتاب، أخذت في حسابها الحاجة إلى التوسع في مجال تربية الخيول لتشمل الدولة بأكملها، وكذلك حب الشعب الروسي للخيل. فهذه المبادئ لم تركز على تنمية وتطوير صفة واحدة من صفات الخيل كالسرعة أو الرشاقة، بما يلحق الضرر بالصفات الأخرى المطلوبة، بل ركزت على تطوير كافة الصفات ودون اللجوء إلى وسائل اصطناعية. إن تقاليد تربية الخيل في روسيا والتي تطورت بفضل الكونت أورلوف وحدت المواصفات التي يجب توافرها في الخيول مثل سرعة الحركة وجمال الشكل والقوة والقدرة على الاحتمال. ولقد كان هدف تربية الخيول الأورلوفية (سلالة خيل روسية) سواء خيول السباق أو خيول الركوب هو إيجاد حصان من شأنه أن يستخدم للنقل، والسير بسهولة.
