منذ أقدم العصور والإنسان مدفوع بطبيعته، إلى التأمل فيما يحيط به من أشياء، أدركها وأحس بجمالها واستمتع بها، وعندما ألحت على الإنسان الأول حاجته إلى الجميل والزخرفة، كان من البديهي أن تكون الطبيعة مصدر إلهامه، واستوحى من بعض ما يحيط به من مشاهدها، عناصر زخرفية لخطوط بدائية، زين بها كهفه، ووشم بها جسده، وبمرور الزمن واستمرار التطور، وتوفر بعض أسباب أمنه وسلامته ارتقى بكفره ونمت حواسه، واستخدم عناصر زخرفية بسيطة، من الأشكال الهندسية والنباتية والحيوانية، جمل بها مأواه، وبعض أسلحته وأوانيه.
وكانت الحضارة الإسلامية، حيث شهدت فيها صناعة الزجاج وزخرفته عصراً من عصورها الذهبية ونقش الزجاج بمهارة فائقة على نوافذ وأبواب المساجد والقصور.
