على الرغم من أن المكتبة العربية تزخر بالعديد من الكتابات والدراسات المتصلة بالقرية على وجه الخصوص، والريف بوجه عام، ومع ما لهذه الكتابات من قيمة كبرى في إلقاء الضوء على طبيعة المجتمع الريفي ومشكلاته، فإن هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا الآن يعد إسهاماً في مجال علم الاجتماع الريفي، حاول أن يضم العديد من الموضوعات وأن ينفتح على آفاق جديدة ويطرق-بحذر-بعض الأبواب التي لم تطرق قبلاً.
وقد كان من الطبيعي في كتاب مثل هذا، أن يبدأ بتمهيد عن تعريف علم الاجتماع الريفي بالطريقة المألوفة والتقليدية، ويعرج على وحدى التحليل الأساسية في هذا العلم ألا وهي "المجتمع المحلي" ليس لأهمية ذلك في حد ذاته، بل ليتمكن القارئ من الانتقال من أكثر وحدات الدراسة بساطة ومحدودة إلى أكثرها اتساعاً وشمولاً. وليدرك العقل طبيعة الاختلاف بين مستويي التحليل: المجتمعي المحلي، وما هو فوق المجتمعي المحلي، أي الذي يتجاوز حدود المجتمع المحلي بل والمجتمع الكبير الذي يضمه، فيصبح تحليلاً عبر المجتمعات، يستهدف اكتشاف طبيعة علاقات التأثير والتأثر من خلال فهم بعض القوانين التي تحكمها.
وقد كان ذلك واضحاً على وجه الخصوص في الفصلين الأخيرين من الكتاب. ويتوسط هذا التحليل على مستوى المجتمع المحلي وذاك الذي أجرى على المستوى العالمي، تحليل شامل أيضاً لما سمي بمداخل التغيير الاجتماعي المخطط الذي تعرض لمختلف سياسات التنمية الريفية في القطار النامية مستخلصاً ما طرحه مل مدخل منها، من إيجابيات وسلبيات.
