هذا الكتاب الذي نقدمه للدارس المتخصص في علم الاجتماع يتضمن من بداية الفصل الأول بتقديم رؤية نظرية في نشأة هذا العلم من حيث المفهوم، والمجال، والنشأة، أما الفصل الثاني فقد عالج قضية مهمة في مجال علم الاجتماع الريفي وهي قضية الفروق الريفية الحضرية، والنظريات المفسرة لها من مستخلصين تصورات نظرية مقترحة لتوضيح خصائص المجتمع الريفي، في حين تناول الفصل الثالث قضية التخلف في القرية المصرية موضحًا بشكل أساسي عوامل تخلف القرية المصرية من منظور تاريخي تحليلي شامل.
بينما يعرج الفصل الرابع على موضوع مهم خاص بعملية التنمية المتكاملة مشيرًا إلى نماذج محلية وعالمية من واقع العالم الثالث للخروج بتصور عملي للنهوض بالريف المصري، أما الفصل الخامس فقد عالج بصورة شاملة موضوع القيم والتنمية الريفية.
وينتهي الكتاب بدراسة مهمة ذات طبيعة تطبيقية عن "الفلاحون والمسألة الزراعية في مصر"، وهي عنوان الفصل السادس ونعرض في هذا الفصل للتحليل السوسيولوجي لدراسة الفلاحين، ومن خلال مفهومهم، ووضعهم الاجتماعي والسياسي ثم السلوك الاقتصادي لهم، ثم يركز على المسألة الزراعية في مصر من حيث أصولها قبل الثورة، ثم لأبعادها أثناء الثورة، ثم للمسألة الزراعية في ظل سياسة التحرر الاقتصادي وينتهي هذا الفصل بدراسة تطبيقية توضح الملامح الواقعية للمسألة الزراعية في الريف المصري، ثم تناول القانون الخاص بتنظيم العلاقات الإيجارية.
