قيل عن رشيد نخلة، أدب رشيد نخلة، هز طفولة اللبنانيين في مهادهم، ونمى الفروسية في شبابهم، وحبّب القرية إلى قلوبهم، فنشأ عندهم حب الوطن متقداً قوياً. وكيف لا يكون كذلك وهو واضع النشيد الوطني اللبناني "كلنا للوطن"، النشيد الذي خلّد رشيداً بعد مماته، فهو في حناجر اللبنانيين، في الوطن الأم، وفي المهجر، باقٍ، ما بقي لبنان.
في (كتاب المنفى) سيرة حياتية كاملة عن رشيد نخلة كتبها أصحابه، رفاق الدرب ممن عاصروه في لبنان وفي المنفى، وذكريات له، بين حوادث ونوازل لبنانية، يرجع عهدها إلى ما قبل الحرب العالمية الأولى (من سنة 1914 إلى سنة 1918) بقليل، وأشياء مما عرض له في المنفى، وكتابات تاريخية، وإستطرادات أدبية، مع جملة من أعماله وأشعاره ورسائله / بخط اليد، فكان الكتاب وثيقة تأريخية – أدبية، وترجمة شاملة لواحد من أبناء هذا الوطن، الذي عاش له، وأخلص لترابه ...
