بعض الظروف التاريخية تملي على عدد من مثقفي وكتّاب الأمة البارزين أن يبحثوا عن حرية شخصية بقدر ما يبحثون عن حرية فنية ، ليتمكنوا من التعبير الحر عن حالهم وأوطانهم .
يدل مفهوم المنفى في هذا الكتاب ، على ارتباط الإضطرار إلى المنفى بالإضطهاد السياسي . ولتحديد المفهوم بشكل أدق يعني المنفى في هذا السياق ، وفي أي سياق آخر ، الإقامة الإضطرارية في بلد آخر بسبب القمع والملاحقة أو غياب الحريات بشكل عام أو محاولة الحفاظ على الحياة الشخصية من خطر ما محدق بها ناتج عن طبيعة الأوضاع السياسية في الوطن .
إنه " حالة من التشرّد ، والإنفصال ، والإقتلاع " ومن الغريب أن نضطر للتفكير به ، بل ومن الرهيب أن نعيشه .
إن اية إقامة أخرى خارج الوطن مستندة على أسباب ودوافع أخرى تعتبر هجرة ، وأدبها أدب مهجر . كما هي الحال بالنسبة لجبران خليل جبران وإيليا أبي ماضي وميخائيل نعيمة وغيرهم الكثير . والفرق بين المنفى والمهجر كالفرق بين الوجع والترف .
ولكننا ، في هذا الكتاب ، أدرجنا المضطرين إلى مغادرة العراق لأسباب إقتصادية وسياسية وفكرية خانقة ، ناتجة عن وضع سياسي مضطرب ، ضمن فئة المنفى لأسباب إعتبارية أو تاريخية أو منهجية .
يحاول هذا الكتاب تغذية الذاكرة الجماعية وثقافة الأفراد الذين يجدون أنفسهم مشردين خارج أوطانه ويعطي زخماً لأنطولوجيا معاصرة ، يحاول بعض سارقي التاريخ الحديث طمسها كما يفعل بكثير من أمور حياتنا الفكرية .
