أياً كان أصل الكتاب الذين يحلل أعمالهم هذا الكتاب، فإنهم جميعاً يشتركون في حالة واحدة أدعوها المنفى المزدوج. وعلى الرغم من نشأتهم في بيئة ثقافية مختلفة اختلافاً جذرياً عن بيئة إنكلترا، فإنهم اختاروا الكتابة باللغة الإنكليزية، وهم لهذا السبب، منفيون ثقافياً عن مصادر تلك اللغة وموروثاتها ومنفيون لغوياً عن الأجواء والشعوب التي يكتبون عنها.
ولما كانت تجارب كتاب أفريقيا وجزر الهند الغربية الذين يستعملون اللغة الإنكليزية مختلفة، فإن هذا الكتاب يعالج منفى مزدوجاً بمعنى بسيط جداً أيضاً، أي إنه يعالج بالأحرى أدب شعبين لهما تجربة مشتركة تتمثل في أنهما خضعا للاستعمار وتعرضا إلى أنظمة تمييز عنصري وثقافي، غير أن هذا الأدب يمتاز بنكهته وخصائصه المتميزة. ولم أحاول الإيحاء بعلاقات أشد تعقيداً بين الاثنين، إذ إن الهدف من وراء هذا الكتاب هو تعريف القارئ ببعض الشخصيات الرئيسة التي تمثل الكتابة الجديدة وكذلك ببعض الاتجاهات الرئيسة التي اتخذتها حتى الآن، ولا يأمل هذا العرض أن يكون شاملاً، وهو قبل كل شيء، لا يدعي أنه أحاط بنطاق وتنوع العمل الذي تحقق حتى الآن.
ومن خلال اللغة العالمية التي استخدمها هؤلاء الكتاب، فإنهم لم يخلصوا العالم من عبء الصور المشوهة التي خلفها الاستعمار فحسب، بل نجحوا في تحديد موقعهم وتمجيد التجربة التي تقف وراء ذلك الموقع. لقد غير هؤلاء الكتاب صورة بلادهم ليس في عيون العالم فحسب، بل في عيون شعوب أفريقيا وجزر الهند الغربية نفسها.
