في شهر أيار من السنة 1958، دخل لبنان في محنة موجعة دامية استمرت إلى الخامس عشر من تشرين الأول، وكان قد سبقها ورافقها في معظم الشرق العربي هزات مماثلة لها حيناً مماثلة أحياناً، فكان لا بد لهذه العوامل من أن تثير في القلوب هلعاً، وفي النفوس قلقاً وجودياً، وفي الوجدان القومي تساؤلات رهيبة تتجمع حول ماضينا وحاضرنا ومستقبلنا، فتضعنا جميعاً أمام مسؤوليات جسام إما أن تتعامى عنها فتغيب عن المسرح، وإما أن نضطلع بها فنشارك في صنع التاريخ، تاريخ كياننا أجمع.
وهذا ما دعا الندوة اللبنانية أن ترغب إلى واحد من أكابر محاضريها ومفكر فيلسوف ملتزم الشأن الوطني العام أن يعرض لمأساتنا فيحلل أسبابها عمقاً وشمولاً ويرسم للأجيال الطالعة سبل الخلاص والنهضة. وهكذا كانت له هذه المحاضرات السبع حول "حضارتنا على المفترق" ألقاها الأستاذ رينه حبشي.
ولقد نشرت أولاً باللغة الفرنسية التي ألقيت فيها. وأمام الفعالية التي أحدثتها فقد عيد ترجمتها إلى اللغة العربية فانبرى لهذا العمل الأستاذان جوزيف أبو جودة وجورج شامي بالتعاون ومكتب الندوة.
وإننا إذ نضع هذا الكتاب بين أيدي قراء العربية، نأمل أن يلاقي جهد الأستاذ حبشي وبذور تفكيره الخلاق وعناية المترجمين حقلاً خصباً من التأمل والانفتاح لدى المعنيين بشؤوننا ممن يعملون على إنقاذ تاريخنا في توق منهم إلى غد لبناني عربي شرقي غربي أفضل ينمو فيه الإنسان ويحقق رسالته.
