يمثّل شعر عمر بن أبي ربيعة (643م-711م) حياة الإنتقال من حياة البادية والجاهلية، إلى فضاء الحضارة التي شهدت في الإطار العربي الخالص، ألواناً من الشعور والتفكير والعمل والتعبير، لا عهد للناس بها من قبل، على نحو ما يمثل أيضاً ذلك المزيج من الديانات الثلاث: الوثنية والنصرانية والإسلام.
في هذا الكتاب، يدرس عبد اللطيف شرارة الحس الجمالي، وتمثلاته العملية، في شعرية عمر بن أبي ربيعة مسلطاً الأضواء على نشأته وعصره وحياته وأغراضه الشعرية بما فيها الغزل، الذي اشتهر فيه حتى صار شاعر الغزل دون منازع، وقد تميّز بقدرته على وصف المرأة وعواطفها وهواجسها، وكل ما يتعلق فيها وبجمالها وحسنها، يُضاف إلى ذلك الطرافة في مواقفه وتصرفاته وسلوكاته، فلم يكن جاداً كل الجد، ولا هازلاً كل الهزل، أو كما عبّر إبن أبي عتيق: "والله ما بالى إبن أبي ربيعة أوقع عليهن، أم وقعن عليه!".
يقول المؤلف شرارة عن كتابه هذا "حاولت في هذه "المختارات" من اشعار عمر بن أبي ربيعة، أن أقدم الصورة الصحيحة عن اسلوبه في تناول الحياة، ومعاشرة المرأة، والولع بالجمال، والتحدث عن النفس وما يجول فيها ... إلا أن الهدف الأمثل الذي جُهدت في بلوغه من اختيار القصائد والمقطعات، إنما هو أن يتلمس القارىء مواضع الطرافة ومواطن الطلاوة في هذا النوع من الشعر الذي يطلق عليه وصف "الغزل"، وإذا لم يكن الغزل طريفاً، أو لم يتسم بالطلاوة، خسر ميزته كشعر وتحوّل عما يحببه إلى النفس، ويقربه إلى القلب ...".
