فتح عمر بن أبي ربيعة العربي الأصيل، عينيه على أوضاع إجتماعية لم يعرفها أبوه ولا أمه، إنه المجتمع الحجازي الذي كان مهبط الوحي والنبوة، وموطن الخلافة، وأبناء الخلفاء، وحاضرة الدولة الإسلامية.
لقد تهيأت للمجتمع الحجازي، الظروف التي لم تتهيأ لمجتمع قبله فقد شاءت الأقدار أن تنتقل الخلافة إلى بني أمية فأوجس هؤلاء خيفة من أبناء الخلفاء أو الصحابة الذين كانوا يقيمون في الحجاز، فكان على الأمويين أن يعزلوا هذه البلاد عن العمل السياسي، بتحويل الأنظار إلى أعمال اخرى تلهي عن هذا العمل.
وقد ترافق هذا العزل السياسي للحجاز، مع إزدهار إقتصادي مميز بتوجيه أموي، فالأموال تتدفق على بلاد الحجاز من كل حدب وصوب ليتنعم الناس، ويسترخون، فيبتعدون عن كل ما يشغل تفكيرهم، أو يرهقه.
والإزدهار الإقتصادي اقترن بحركة ليس لها مثيل في قطر إسلامي آخر هو التوجه نحو الملاهي، وإهتصار المتعة واللذة على إختلاف أنواعها، مما جعل من بلاد الحجاز مقصداً لكل طامح في شهرة، أو طامع في لذة، أو مجتهد لغنى، فكان أن تدفق على تلك الديار الكثير من الموالي على إختلاف أنواعهم وأجناسهم، من فرس، وترك وروم وغيرهم، ليكونوا هم أدوات الترفيه، إذ كان منهم المغني والملحن، والمهرج، والراقص... إلخ.
إزاء هذا الواقع الإجتماعي نجد جيلاً من الشباب قد ولد وهو يحمل من الخصائص النفسية، والبيولوجية، ما هو مخالف لما يحمله الأبوان إلى حد بعيد، في هذه الفترة يولد شاعرنا عمر بن أبي ربيعة الذي ملأ اسمه الآفاق، وأصبح علماً من أعلام الشعر الغزلي المشهورين، بل رائد هذا الفن على الإطلاق.
وشاعرنا من الشخصيات التي استهوت الكثيرين من الباحثين لدراستها، والتعرف على مكامن ذاتها، وملامح شخصيتها، وفي هذا السياق، يأتي هذا الكتاب ليقدم دراسة عن عمر من الزاوية التي لم ينظر إليه من خلالها، وقد قسم البحث إلى ستة فصول وخاتمة، ففي الفصل الأول تحدث المؤلف عن العوامل المؤثرة في نشأة شعر الغزل في العصر الأموي، وفي الفصل الثاني تناول فيه الحديث عن شعر الغزل، والفصل الثالث خصص للحدث عن عمر بن أبي ربيعة، أصوله، اسمه، نسبه، قبيلته، أسرته، وفاته، أما الفصل الرابع جاء عن شعر عمر بن أبي ربيعة، والفصل الخامس للخصائص الفنية لشعر عمر بن أبي ربيعة، والفصل السادس عمر في آراء الناقدين ثم المصادر والمراجع.
