كان ابن خلدون قد أوضح بما لا مجال للشك فيه، أن في "باطن التاريخ نظر وتحقيق، وتعليل للكائنات ومباديها دقيق، وعلم بكيفيات الوقائع وأسبابها عميق، فهو لذلك أصيل في الحكمة عريق، وجدير بأن يعد في علومها وخليق".
لا جدال أن هذه النظرة إلى "باطن التاريخ" وحدها، توجز ما ينبغي للإنسان، كل إنسان، أن يتعلمه من الحوادث والأحوال والأخبار والأقوال، في حاضره وماضيه ليأخذ في هندسة مستقبله، حين يصبح قادراً على الشروع في هذه الهندسة. وما ينبغي للفرد في هذه الحال، جدير بسعي الجماعة أيضاً، بالغاً ما بلغ عددها من القلة أو الكثرة. فالتاريخ ينبوع الحكمة.
وقد استقى المؤلف من التاريخ حكماً جمعها وأوردها في هذا الكتاب. وقد وضعه ضمن ثلاثة أقسام: 1-أحوال وأقوال. 2-محاورات مع التاريخ. 3-نحو المستقبل. وهذه الأقسام الثلاثة، كتبت أول ما كتبت، في أحاديث أذيعت، ونشر بعضها، وكان لها صدى محبب، ومدوٍّ أحياناً، في مختلف الأوساط التي استمعت إليها، أو اطلعت عليها.
