فارس من فرسان المرأة، وشاعر من شعراء الغزل بذ الأولين والآخرين، بهي الطلعة، حسن القد طوال، أعسر، ناحل الجسم، فصيح اللسان، أعطر الناس، وأحسنهم هيئة وقيافة، يليس الوشي والحلل، ولطالما تنكر بزي الأعراب، خالط ثلة من فتيان قريش وشبابها اللاهيين، وهو قرشي مثلهم، من بني مخزوم، فكنت تراه عاكفاً على حياة اللهو، دائباً على حضور مجالس الغناء، حيث المغنون والمغنيات الذائعو الصيت، أمثال معبد والغريض، وسائب خاثر، وابن عائشة، وابن سريج، وسلامة وحبابة، وخليدة، وربيحة، وعقيلة، وعزة الميلاء.
شغف بالمرأة فكان شاعرها بحق افتتن بها، وباح لها بمكنون حبه، ووجدانه، وصفها فأطرى محاسنها، وتغزلا بها ناسباً ومشبباً، فوقف عليها شعره، وما ترك مناسبة من المناسبات، أو موسماً من مواسم الحج أو العمرة إلا وحضره مقتفياً آثار النساء اللائي كن يعرضن له ويعرض لهن، فيذكرهن ف يشعره الذي سرعان ما كان يتردد في البطاح والوهاد والوديان، تتناقله وتحدو به الركبان...
أيها القارئ... إن شاقك معرفة هذا الفارس الشاعر، فهو عمر بن ابي ربيعة المخزومي، أحد أبرز شعراء الغزل، بل زعيمهم، في العصر الأموي، وفي العصور اللاحقة. وأنت إن سرّك حديث عمر، وهفوت إلى سماع شعره وقراءته وسماع شيء من قصصه وأخباره ونوادره وحياته، وهو الذي أسرف على نفسه، ونهل من اللذة ما طاب لذة النساء، ملحاً على هواه، عاشقاً للمرأة، ومعشوقاً، هاتكاً أسرار الحرائر من النساء، وغير الحرائر، كما يتضح لنا من شعره، غير متورع من حرام، ولا مستمسك بعرى خلق قويم، وإني لأعيذك، أن تنهج نهجه، أو أن تحذو حذوه، وأحذرك أن تقع في ما وقع فيه هو، فهاك عمر بن أبي ربيعة، في شعره ولهوه، وغزله، وحياته، وإن في شعره ما يلذ ويغري، إرضاء لفضول، وتذوقاً لحلاوة شعر، ليس إلا، وطرافة أسلوب، وإن ساء هذا الشعر، لا شك إلى الخلق والدين.
ومن أجل الغاية، فقد وسم هذا الكتاب باسم (شاعر الغزل عمر بن أبي ربيعة) وقسم إلى فصول ثلاثة هي: الفصل الأول: سيرة حياته، أخباره ونوادره، الفصل الثاني: عمر شاعر الغزل، الفصل الثالث: خصائص غزل عمر.
