حفل العصر الأموي بكثير من الشعراء الذين عرفوا، واشتهروا بما قدموه من إبداع شعري، غير أن الشاعر عمر بن أبي ربيعة ينفرد دون غيره من الشعراء بشهرة لا مثيل لها أساسها تجسيده لعواطف إنسانية متنوعة تخص الإنسان في كل زمان مكان، وقد جعله ذلك يرسي أسساً متينة لشعر الغزل والحب في مدن الحجاز، إذ كان شعره خير معبر عن واقعة، وفي الوقت نفسه خير من طور شعر الح، وجوهر شعر الغزل مما جعل قصائده تمثل وثيقة تاريخية، وأدبية تصور مستوى تطور واقع الحياة في تلك الحقبة بشكل أمين فوصلت شهرته، إلى حد الإفتتان به، إذ فتن الدراسين القدامى والمحدثين، فاقبلوا على شعره يتدارسونه بين مشيد به وساخط عليه، حتى قال عن شعره ابن أبي عتيق: (إن لشعر عمر بن أبي ربيعة لموقعا في القلب، ومخالطة للنفس، ليسا لغيره، ولو كان شعر يسحر لكان شعره سحرا).
إن عمر أستأثر بعناية النقاد قديماً وحديثاً شأنه شأن الشعراء الذين أحدثوا في الشعر تجديداً، وأثير حوله التأويلات والشروح واستمرت حتى الوقت الحاضر، فانصب إهتمام الباحثين على تجلية حقيقة حب الشاعر وغزله، على وفق مناهج متباينة.
وفي هذا المجال يستهدف هذا البحث دراسة (عمر بن أبي ربيعة) في نصوص النقاد التي دارت على شعره، وحبه منذ بداية القرن الماضي، حتى الوقت الحاضر، بإختلاف آرائهم، ومناهجهم النقدية، فضلاً عن كشف شخصية الشاعر، وحبه، ومن ثم مناقشة آرائهم ومواجهتها مواجهة فاحصة متمعّنة.
وقد توزع البحث على بابين، تحدث الباب الأول عن عمر بن أبي ربيعة كإنسان وعرض الفصل الثاني لفن الموازنة بين عمر والشعراء العرب القدامى في حين انصرف الباب الثاني إلى الدراسة الفنية فتحدث عن بناء القصيدة وخصائصها الفنية، وعني في الفصل الثاني بالدراسات الأسلوبية المعاصرة التي كتبت عن عمر.
