النفس الإنسانية هي رأس البلاء، ومعدن الفضيحة، وخزانة إبليس، ومأوى كل سوء، لا يعرفها إلا خالقها، قال تعالى واصفاً إيّاها: "إن النفس لأمارة بالسوء"، وإذا أردت أن تعرف نفسك ما نظر في كثرة مخالفتها ومعصيتها، كيف عرضتك بكل ذنب من ذنوبك لسخط الله تعالى، وعقابه، ثم أنظر في حسناتها وفي مقاصدها بأعمالها، قل ما ينفعك عمل من أعمالها، من رياء أو كبر أو عجب، فإذا فتشت عن ذلك عرفت أنها هي المباشرة لأسباب إهلاكك بمعاصيها، فهي تعدك بالإخلاص في جميع الأعمال، فإذا وجدت من ترائيه غدرت بك، وراءت بأعمالها، وهي تعدم بالورع، فإذا حصلت أسبابه ارتكبت أعظم الشبهات غدراً منها، وهي تعدك بالرضا بالقضاء قبل نزوله، فإذا نزل كرهت ما زعمت، وتسخّطت ولم ترضى، ولهذا جاء في الحديث الشريف: "وأسألك الرضا بعد القضاء".
لذلك لا بد للعبد من مخالفة نفسه ومجاهدتها ومحاسبتها في جميع ما تدعو إليه، وعليه أن يملك نفسه ولا يملكها، ويضيف عليها ولا يوسع لها، وإن وسوست له أمراً منعها شهواتها، ومكم شرع الله ورضاه في كل أمر، وإن لم يمسكها انطلقت به، وقويت عليه فصرعته، وأردته في النار. وفي هذا الكتيب بيان لطرق تزكية النفس، وهو يحتوي على تمهيد وفصلين وخاتمة، في التمهيد ذكر لأهمية مجاهدة النفس، وفي الفصل الأول تحليل لمحاسن الأخلاق، أما الفصل الثاني فاحتوى على شرح لكيفية تخليها من الرذائل.
