إن المخطوطات الإسلامية هي الإرث الذي خلَّفه لنا سلفنا الصالح، وهي تُقدَّر بمجموعها بنحو عشرة ملايين مخطوط، موزعة في بقاع الأرض وعواصم الدول.
ويُقدَّر عدد عناوين الكتب بدون تكرار بنحو نصف مليون عنوان في شتَّى الموضوعات، وهو عدد هائل يدل على عظمة الحضارة الإسلامية، وإهتمامها بالعلم، ولا غرو فقد حملت مشعل الحضارة في العالم ثلاثة عشر قرناً من الزمن، في الوقت الذي كانت فيه أوروبا تغرق في ظلمات الجهل.
ولأهمية علم "المخطوطات" ظهرت كتب كثيرة تناولته، منها هذا الكتاب الذي وضعه مؤلفه يذكر فيه آخر ما توصّل إليه أساطين هذا الفن، ويكون مرجعاً للطلاب والمشتغلين بتحقيق المخطوطات، ودليلاً لهم في عملهم.
وقد قسم هذا البحث إلى: تمهيد، وثلاثة أبواب، وخاتمة؛ ففي التمهيد "ما هي المخطوطات، وكيف وصلتنا، وما هي أهميتها"، أما الباب الأول: "الخطوة الإعدادية، التعرُّف على المخطوط"، الباب الثاني: "الخطوة العملية: تحقيق النّص والتعليق عليه"، الباب الثالث: "الخطوة النهائية: الطباعة والمناقشة".
وقد ذيَّل المؤلف الكتاب بمجموعة من الفهارس الفنّية التي تساعد القارئ على الحصول على مسائله منه بسهولة ويُسْر.
