إن دين الله تبارك وتعالى قد اعتنى بالنفس البشرية عناية فائقة, ورسمت لها الشريعة الغراء طريق السعادة والنجاة, وحذرتها من مفازة الغواية والهلاك. وتبرز تزكية هذا الدين للنفس البشرية من أول ركن من أركانه وهي شهادة التوحيد التي تخلص النفس من الآلهة والأرباب والمعبودات الباطلة, وتعرفها بالإله الحق والرب المطاع. وتزكية النفس مطلب ومقصد من مقاصد الشارع, فالدين كله يدور حول تزكية النفس لتعبد ربها بحق وصدق, وتبتعد عن مساخطه ومناهيه بإرادة وعزم. وكان من أهم ما تناوله الكتاب: جهاد النفس, موقف المخلصين من غواية الشيطان, الإحباط الذي يذهب إليه المعتزلة والخوارج, الإحباط الذي اتفق عليه المسلمون, مناقشة قول المبتدعة من خوارج ومعتزلة في الإحباط, ادعاء المعتزلة العدل, وزن الحسنات والسيئات, اختلاف الناس في الموزون, الأعمال تصوراً صوراً قائمة بنفسها, كلمة الصديق رضي الله عنه, الكافر المحض قد ضل عمله, هل للسيئات ثقل.
