وردت إشارات عديدة في الكتاب والسنّة إلى أسماء الله الحسنى وبصيغ متعددة تدلّ على أن أسماء الله تعالى لا تنحصر. فبالإضافة إلى التسعة والتسعين اسماً التي وردت في الحديث الذي أخرجه الترمذي في "الجامع" عن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: "إن لله تسعة وتسعين اسماً من أحصاها دخل الجنة...". وقد اختلف العلماء في معنى أحصاها، فمنهم من قال: أحصاها علماً وبياناً؛ ومنهم من قال حفظها على قلبه؛ ومنهم من قال: العمل بمقتضاها، والتفكّر في مدلولها والتعظيم لمسماها والتقديس لمعانيها. وينبغي التأكيد على أن أسماء الله الحسنى توقيفية، ولا يجوز أن يطلق على الله اسم لم يرد في الكتاب أو السنّة، خشية إطلاق اسم يوهم النقص في ذاته سبحانه وتعالى.
وقد عمد الدكتور يوسف مرعشلي في هذا الكتاب إلى جمع الأسماء الحسنى في هذا الكتاب وقد وزّعها بتنسيق ضمن تسعة أبواب تدلّ على صفات ذاته وأفعاله سبحانه وتعالى، فجعل الأسماء المتعلقة بالخلق والإيجاد والتكوين في باب، وجعل الأسماء الحسنة الدالة على الرزق في مجموعة مستقلة. أما المجموعة الثالثة فقد ضمت أسماء الله الحسنى الداخلة في باب الهبة والعطاء، وجعل في القسم الرابع الأسماء الحسنى التي تعود إلى الرحمة. أما المجموعة الرابعة فهي تضم الأسماء الحسنى التي تدخل في باب الولاية والنصر، إضافة إلى أسماء الله الحسنى التي تدخل في باب علاقة المكلفين بخالقهم والأسماء الحسنى التي تعود إلى صفات الأفعال، والصفات المتعلقة بصفات القدم، والبقاء، وصفة قيامه تعالى بنفسه، والأسماء المتعلقة بصفة مخالفته تعالى للحوادث وصفات الكمال - العلم والقدرة.
