لا تزال حركة التأليف مستمرة إلى زماننا هذا، وقد أصبح من المتعارف عليه في زماننا تكليف طلبة العلم بكتابة بحث واحد أو أكثر مختصر أثناء الدراسة الثانوية والجامعية، وأنه لا يمنح الطالب الشهادات العليا (كالعالمية) الماجستير (والعالمية) الدكتوراه إلا بعد إعداد بحث مطول لكل مرحلة، وقررت مادة في الجامعات لتدريس الطلاب أصول كتابة الأبحاث ومناهجها وانطلاقاً من حاجة الطلاب لكتاب موسع يشرح لهم أصول كتابة البحث العلمي فقد سعى الدكتور "يوسف المرعشلي" أستاذ مناهج البحث في كلية الشريعة بجامعة بيروت الإسلامية سعى لوضع كتابه هذا في هذا الموضوع، مدوناً فيه خلاصة مبادئه وأصوله وقواعده.
مبيناً في التمهيد أهمية البحث وأهدافه وأنواعه ومواضيعه وشروطه، من ثم عكف لتمديد الخطوات التي يعتمدها الباحث للإعداد بحثه فتحدث عن اختيار تخصص البحث والمشرق على البحث، تحديد عنوان بحثه، مصادر البحث الأولية، التقميش وتجمع المعلومات وتوزيعها كتابة المتن، والهوامش، والمقدمة والخاتمة والفهارس.
بعد ذلك توقف المؤلف عند موضوع تحقيق المخطوطات مقسماً هذا الموضوع إلى ثلاث مراحل: المرحلة النظرية وهي مرحلة تحديد اختصاص المخطوط وموضوعه ومراكز المخطوطات في العالم وفهارسها وافياً والمشرف على التحقيق وعنوان المخطوط وشروطه وفهارسه.
والمرحلة الثانية المرحلة العملية وهي مرحلة تحقيق المخطوط ولا تعليق عليه والمرحلة الثالثة أو النهائية وهي مرحلة الطباعة والتجليد والمناقشة. أما الباب الثالث من الكتاب فخصصه الباحث لمصادر المكتبة الإسلامية: علوم القرآن، علوم الحديث، الفقه وأصوله، التوحيد، السيرة النبوية، تراجم الرجال، التاريخ والجغرافية الإسلامية الحضارة والفكر الإسلامي، أقراص الكمبيوتر، شبكة الإنترنت... وأخيراً أفرد الباب من الكتاب لعلم المكتبات فتحدث عن تدوين العلوم عند المسلمين، وأخيراً في المكتبة وأثرها التربوي، نشأت المكتبات وأشهرها، في القديم والحديث، المكتبة اليوم قاعاتها خزائنها تنظيمها.
