هذا الكتاب ألفه العلامة البسطامي في علم الكتابة والحروف وهذا الكتاب هو ثالث ثلاثة كتب لها أهميتها في هذا الفن أولها:
كتاب (حل الرموز ومفاتيح الكنوز) لجابر بن حيان الكوفي، وثانيها: كتاب: (شوق المستهام بين معرفة رموز الأقلام) لابن وحشيه أحمد بن علي بن مختار الكلداني أحد علماء النبط ومن أدباء العراق في عصره، وقد وصف في كتابه هذا أصول الأقلام التي تداولتها الأمم الماضية والحكماء السابقون، والفلاسفة العارفون.
أما كتاب البسطامي الذي أسماه: (مباهج الأعلام في مناهج الأقلام) فقد رتبه على مقدمة وكتابين وخاتمة، واشتمل على طائفة واسعة من الأقلام الروحانية، ويقصد البسطامي بالقلم الروحاني، القلم الذي كان يستعمل بموازاة الأبجدية المعروفة للتعبير عن حالات روحية مختلفة، ولا يخفى على من يتطلع إلى الأشكال التي رسمها البسطامي للأقلام المقصودة بالبحث من الإحساس بالثروة الكبيرة التراث الخطي القديم الغني بالتشكيل الخالص.
