يفهم النقاد من الرومانسية فب الأدب ثلاث مدارس متشابهة قُيّض لها أن تظهر في بلدان أوروبية مختلفة وفي أوقات متقاربة. فقد أريد بها أولاً "مدرسة النقاد الألمان" أواخر القرن الثامن عشر، التي كان رائدها فريدريتش شليغل، وتتمثل خاصيات هذه المدرسة في الثورة على المبادئ والقوانين الجمالية الأرسطية واستبدال الوجدان والانفعال الشخصي بها واعتداد الرواية النثرية أظهر الأجناس الأدبية تعبيراً عن عصر هذه المدرسة. ويلحق بهذه المدرسة مدرسة الشعر والنقد الانكليزي التي ظهرت في العقد الأخير من القرن الثامن عشر وقادها كولريدج ووردسوث. وأبرز خاصيات هذه المدرسة: الثورة على القواعد الأرسطية، وتحرير الشعر من القوافي الجامدة والإسراف في استعمال الزخارف البلاغية وتصوير الأدب لداخلية الأديب والاهتمام بالطبيعة الخارجية في الوصف الشعري. وينضم إلى هاتين المدرستين مدرسة الرومانسيين الفرنسيين بين 1820 و1850م. وأوضح ملامح هذه المدرسة الاهتمام بالذات المبدعة والتعبير عن الشعور بالوحدة والحزن الناشئ عن القلق. ويعرض هذا الكتاب الملامح الأساسية المميزة للمذهب الرومانسي عند أعلام المدارس الثلاث السابقة ويجعلك على بينة من تصور أعلام الرومانسية الأدبية لهذا المذهب الفني من خلال التعاريف والبيانات الرسمية والكتب كما يحدد لك التطور التاريخي لفهم الرومانسيين أنفسهم لمذهبهم الجديد. وبالاطلاع على محتويات هذا الكتاب نجد اولاً مقدمة المترجم ويليها مقدمة جامعة المقتطفات ثم الجزء الأول وفيه تعريفات ومفهومات ثم الجزء الثاني وفيه الفن الرومانسي: المبادئ الأساسية، وبعدها الجزء الثالث ويتكلم عن الفن الرومانسي: الشكل والجنس الأدبي. أما الجزء الرابع والأخير فهو سرد تاريخي-معلومات في السير والمراجع.
