الأدب "فن لغوي" ما في ذلك شك. والذين يقولون بالأدب "لعباً بالألفاظ" من أبصر الناس بالأدب، إذا أخذنا هذا "اللعب" مأخذ الحذق الأدبي والاقتدار اللغوي، وهم كذلك يريدون، لأنهم يربأون-ولا شك-أن يسقط الأدب في وهدة التكلف لما يتقاضاه من سبة التبالغ، ومعرة التفاصح.
وحتى أولئك الذين يجعلون "الدهشة" أخص خصائص الأدب، وأسمى خصاله، لا يستطيعون أن يقصروها على غرابة الخيال أو عامة الرؤية الأدبية، لأن "الدهشة" مصروفة -ولا بد-إلى الأساليب اللغوية وما قد يعتورها من غرابة التراكيب وطرائق الاستعمال.
من أجل ذلك كان النقد الأدبي "فن دراسة الأساليب اللغوية واستنباط مطارح الجمال في طرائق التعبير، وهذا هو "النقد المحض" أو ما ينبغي أن يكون، لأنه النقد المقصور على "النص" لا "على السياق" كما يقولون في هذا العصر الحديث,
وقد غالب علينا هذا الرأي، ففصلنا القول فيه في الفصول الخمسة الوسطى من الثالث إلى السابع، حيث تستقبلك فيها المحاولة التي حاولناها في رد الجمال اللغوي إلى أصوله البلاغية وينابيعه النفسية والجمالية قدر المستطاع، لأننا نزعم-بذلك-أننا نفتح أبواب التوسع في المفهوم البلاغي الذي خلفه لنا العرب القدماء.
على أننا لا نقول إن الأدب قصر على هذا الجمال اللغوي، وإنما يتسع لصنوف أخرى الدراسة، لعل أولاها بالتقديم ما يتصل بطبيعته، فالأدب ظاهرة، صار الناس في تعليلها والتعريف بها، لأنها موهبة، والمواهب تغري بالبحث والاستقصاء، وكل ذلك من عمل الفلسفة وعلم النفس فرع عليها، والنقاد يسلكون أمثال هذا البحث في "الدراسة الفلسفية" للأدب، والفصلان الأولان من هذا القبيل.
وأما الدراسة الأدبية فيما الفصلان الآخران، وقد حاولت فيهما أن ألتمس آثار البيئة الفكرية أو الصراع الحضاري على الأدب العربي في هذا العصر الحديث، منذ الغزو الأجنبي على مصر وليبيا. تلك هي أبواب الكتاب الثلاثة: الدراسة الفلسفية ثم الدراسة الأدبية، ولا أظنهما يدخلان في النقد الأدبي.
